~ Most of the TV commercials recorded by Chris Matthews & Danny Hesse, 1976-79.

“Seymour” was the beloved TV horror-host of the early 1970’s in the Los Angeles area, hosting “Fright Night” on KHJ (channel 9) and then, later, “Seymour Presents” on KTTV (channel 11).  Rrob recently laid some cassettes on me of that later show, also taped by his Uncle John, and they are just as witty, snide, self-deprecating and professional –- and LIVE! –- as the material you hear here.  Perhaps Totem Records (Rrob’s label) will put out a bootleg of THOSE tapes too someday…

Uncle John did not tape the actual movie segments of the show, nor any of the commercials of the time, so I took the liberty of adding in bits from my collection, taped by me & Danny some years later.  You will find many gems and annoying memories among them, but let me recommend my faves: check out “7/11 Slurpee Rock Cups”, “KTEL Blockbusters” and perhaps the greatest country song ever written just for a car lot, “Cormier Chevrolet.”  The Night Gallery-esque music loop that plays  behind the “TV Guide” ad still creeps me out (and me & Jeff are sampling that already for a track on his new CD so don’t get any ideas!)… At the end of this CD I put on all the stray commercials that did not fit elsewhere, ending with the voice that would play on Channel 52 late at night when the signal got scrambled so they could broadcast “Select TV”  -- PAY TV!?!?  What a concept!
